Okra is one of the popular and nutritious vegetables that comes originally from northeast Africa. It's considered a nutritional powerhouse and has been used throughout history for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
Okra is recently being credited for having many properties to combat diabetes. In a 2011 study published in The Journal of Pharmacy & BioAllied Sciences, Indian researchers reported that when mice diagnosed with diabetes were given okra seeds and peels, there was a noticeable reduction in their blood glucose levels.
In Turkey, for many generations, the seeds of okra have been used as a traditional medicine to combat the effects of diabetes. In the U.S., The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that you can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes and also reduce your blood glucose levels by eating okra regularly.
